What is Meditation?

If you are someone who is a complete beginner, when it comes to Meditation, you must be wondering what it really is. Well I found a simple way of explaining Meditation and in relation also Mindfulness, which I will share in my upcoming posts.

Calming meditative space stones by the sea

Think of yourself as a pond. Now imagine the mind sitting outside, throwing stones into the pond, that keep creating ripples. Those stones are the thoughts your mind keeps creating and thinking about.

When you meditate, the mind comes into a relaxed state, where it stops throwing stones into the pond. So you can be calm and still and enjoy some peace.

Meditation isn’t ‘meditation’ only when you sit under a tree with your legs crossed and eyes closed. Even when you are engaged in a hobby, like knitting or maybe even gardening, when your mind is calm and in a relaxed state, is meditating.

See, it isn’t rocket science at all. Just identify what calms you down and try and include that in your daily routine. However if you want to cultivate a practice of meditation, which means to be able to develop the ability to tap into that state when ever you like, you should experiment with different types and forms of meditation.

Again, meditation isn’t about stopping thoughts (that rarely happens) its only about developing the ability to not get wrapped up in them and the ability to watch them as an observer and let them pass.
